EVENT DETAILS
Date: Thursday, November 7
Time: 8PM HST
Location: The Republik
Headliner: Justin Kawika Young
Born and raised in Hawai’i, Justin Kawika Young first found success in his island home, accumulating 11 number-one hits on Hawai’i radio before relocating to Los Angeles, where he quickly established a following in the local music scene and toured with Colbie Caillat as her acoustic guitarist/background vocalist. They formed Gone West and debuted at Nashville's Grand Ole Opry in 2019, with their first single, "What Could Have Been," hitting the top 25 on Country radio. In 2022, Young joined the band of country star, Brett Young, and ventured out on another adventure which took him around the world for two years. Young recently set out on a new path, which he will reveal soon.
Artist to Watch: Mikaela Freitas
An honor student at Kamehameha Schools, Mikaela's journey into music began early, blossoming into a promising career as a singer, songwriter, and performer. Mikaela's vocal prowess has earned her top accolades in numerous competitions. She clinched first place at the Brown Bags to Stardom statewide finals and first place Overall Vocals at the Spotlight statewide competition. As a finalist in Hawaii Stars and a multiple medalist at the World Championships of Performing Arts, Mikaela’s talent is widely recognized. Her singles, “Wake Up Today with Aloha” and “I Got a Feelin,” are streaming on major music platforms, with her highly anticipated third single, “Locked,” set to release in the fall of 2024.
Artist to Watch: Kala’i Kealoha
At the youthful age of 17, Kalaʻi Kealoha, hailing from Pālolo, Hawaiʻi, stands as a beacon of musical talent, weaving harmonies that resonate with the soul and tell stories through every strum of his ukulele. In 2021, he became one-third of the group Hui Pū who united their talents to create a symphony of Hawaiian, Island Reggae, Country, and Gospel music. Kalaʻi's passion for music has coalesced with his academic pursuits, where he balances his artistic fervor with scholastic dedication. His dedication to his craft led to the release of his original single "Koko War" on April 18, 2022, showcasing his artistic depth and songwriting talent.
Artist to Watch: POHAI
POHAI is a kanaka maoli singer songwriter raised on the east side of the island of Maui. Fusing together elements of acoustic soul, indie, r&b, roots reggae and a dash of Island girl magic, her music captivates audiences. By weaving conscious lyrics, the world experiences a unique view through the eyes of a daughter of Hawai’i. Her original music reflects the interconnectedness of 'āina, kupuna and 'ohana.
Artists to Watch: Music and Rhythm
Nyjah Music and Zyah Rhythm were both born and raised on the beautiful island of O’ahu, deeply rooted in their Hawaiian heritage. Their passion for music is influenced by a wide range of talented local artists, including Common Kings, Bruno Mars, Jack Johnson, Josh Tatofi, Iam Tongi, Kimié Miner, and Maoli. Their vocal style blends the soulful sounds of old-school R&B, the soothing rhythms of Hawaiian music, and today’s chart-topping hits. Through their music, they aim to inspire, heal, celebrate, and bring joy—hoping their voices resonate with listeners on a personal level, whether to uplift spirits or get people moving.
